Variegated (or multicolored) thread changes its color every certain number of stitches.
For example, it can start from yellow, gradually turn into orange color, and so on.
Each small "cut" of single thread is colored in different color.
When you embroider the right design with multicolored thread, the effect can be absolutely stunning. Even a most boring single-color design embroidered in variegated thread, may turn out as a masterpiece.
Another great use for multicolored thread is quilting - for freehand decorating of quilt
blocks or even ready quilts.
